Orthodontic screening involves assessing our Winnipeg patients' teeth, jaws and bite to determine whether or not they will need orthodontic treatment, such as braces or Invisalign.
Who can be screened?
These days, anyone can been screened for potential orthodontic problems; children and adults alike. Orthodontics are no longer just for teens!
The Canadian Dental Association recommends that children should undergo an orthodontic evaluation no later than the age of 7. This allows dentists to determine if there is a problem developing and deal with it before it worsens. In some cases, this type of early intervention can mean that later orthodontic treatment, such as braces, can be completely avoided – or at least shortened.
It's most common to undergo orthodontic evaluation and treatment as a teen or pre-teen. At this point, all the permanent teeth will have finished erupting and any orthodontic issues will be apparent to a dentist or orthodontist.
Many adults think that they've missed the boat when it comes to getting their teeth straightened, but that's not the case! Anyone with healthy teeth and gums can undergo orthodontic treatment.
What happens during the orthodontic screening process?
During an orthodontic screening, your dentist will examine your face, neck, head, jaw and teeth to determine whether there are any misalignment issues. Misalignments can occur in the teeth themselves or in the positioning of the jaws. We will also take x-rays to look at your oral structures in more detail.
If you need orthodontic treatment, our team will help you determine which option is right for you. If your misalignment problem is complex, we will refer you to an orthodontist who will help you determine the best method for dealing with the issue.
